The Setup

Have you ever seen those articles online where some pop-science magazine is screaming that "The Universe is actually just a giant hologram!" or that "Information is a new state of matter"?

It sounds super deep and trippy, right? Like we finally cracked the Matrix or something.

But if you look at it with two seconds of actual common sense, it is hilarious how badly these academics are confusing themselves. They aren't dumb, and they definitely aren't missing data. They're just completely confusing their own language for the real physical world.

Let's look at this plainly so you can laugh the next time some sci-fi article tries to tell you that you live in a computer simulation.

The Map Isn't the Mountain

Think about a regular paper map of a mountain range.

The dirt, the rocks, the trees, and the bears are the actual, real physical stuff. The lines, numbers, and labels printed on the paper are just the information.

That map does an awesome job of describing the mountain. It points right to where the peaks and trails are. But if someone looked at that piece of paper and started arguing that the mountain itself is literally made of ink and lines, you'd think they lost their mind.

Yet that is exactly what physicists are doing when they claim the universe is "made of information." They took the human tool we invented to describe reality, and they're trying to say it is reality. They flipped the horse and the cart.

Information Is a Tag, Not a Thing

To the universe, there is no independent "thing" called information floating around. Information is just a label. It's a pointer, a description, and a tag we apply to stuff.

Look at a chocolate chip cookie.

You can write down the perfect chemical formula for it. You can even code a photorealistic 3D model of a cookie on a supercomputer. That's all perfect information.

But you can't eat that code. It won't stop your stomach from growling. Why? Because it doesn't have the actual physical hardware of mass and energy. The info is just pointing to the idea of a cookie, but it doesn't have the physical ingredients to exist on its own.

Without mass and energy to talk about, "information" is just a blank notebook with nothing to point to.

Your Computer Isn't "Virtual" Either

We love using the word "virtual" for our digital lives. We think of our emails, cloud drives, and video games like they're weightless, magical things floating in some digital void.

But "virtual" is just a word we made up. To the universe, your phone and the internet are 100% physical matter.

The "cloud" is literally just a physical hard drive in a building somewhere, full of trillions of real electrons trapped in tiny microscopic silicon cages. In fact, a physicist named Rolf Landauer proved back in the 60s that whenever you erase or overwrite data on a computer, it must release a tiny bit of real, physical heat.

When your phone or laptop gets hot while you're deleting giant files, you aren't feeling magic. You are feeling the physical weight of real electrons being shoved around. The universe treats your digital files exactly like a stack of wooden blocks. Both require moving real matter, and both cost real energy.

The Ultimate Mirror Trap

Saying the universe is made of information is like looking at a mountain reflected in a lake and claiming the mountain is made of water ripples. The reflection only exists because the physical mountain was already there to bounce light off of it in the first place.

Scientists get confused because their math equations describe the universe so perfectly that they start treating the math like a magic spell creating the world, instead of just a very accurate language humans wrote down to keep track of it.

The universe is a massive, physical reality made of mass and energy. Information is just the scoreboard we invented to keep score. It's incredibly useful, but it's just pointing to the real stuff. It isn't the stuff itself.

Next time someone tells you we live in a simulation, ask them to pass you a virtual sandwich and watch how fast the theory falls apart.
